ISKCON Mauritius
The International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) has experienced significant growth in Mauritius since its establishment, marked by the development of various centers across the island.
Srila Prabhupada's Visit and Vision for Mauritius
Srila Prabhupada, the founder of ISKCON, visited Mauritius in October 1975. During his stay, he delivered several lectures and engaged in discussions emphasizing the importance of spiritual education and self-realization. He highlighted the distinction between the body and the soul, urging individuals to understand their spiritual identity beyond the physical form.
In a lecture attended by some of the nation’s leading citizens, Srila Prabhupada observed that Mauritius had ample land suitable for agriculture. He noted that instead of cultivating essential food grains, the focus was on growing sugar cane for export. He challenged this approach, emphasizing the need for self-sufficiency in food production. He stated, “I understand that instead of growing food grains you are growing sugar cane for exporting. Why? You are dependent on food grains—on rice, wheat, dahl. Why this attempt [at growing sugar cane]? You first of all grow your own eatables.”
Srila Prabhupada envisioned Mauritius as a “spiritual island” and expressed his desire for it to become the first Krishna-conscious nation in the world. He encouraged the establishment of centers where individuals could study and practice the teachings of Lord Krishna, emphasizing the importance of chanting the Hare Krishna mantra, distributing prasadam (sanctified food), and living a life dedicated to devotional service.
His visit laid a strong foundation for the growth of the Krishna consciousness movement in Mauritius, inspiring many to take up the path of devotion and contribute to the spiritual upliftment of society.
